MOTION PICTURE EDITORS GUILD

Location: New York, NY
Date: 2003
Program: Offices / Renovation

For the offices and training center of the Motion Pictures Editors Guild, alterations between light and dark spaces in an edgy minimalist interior set a tone consistent with the general urbaneness of the organization. We configured spaces in order to allow natural lighting to penetrate into interiors, enhancing the overall quality of the environment for occupants. Our design addressed more than 2,400 sf of administrative space, including programmatic areas for executive offices, the Avid film editing training center, and conference and screening facilities. The entire facility is capable of accommodating large gatherings, as well as compartmentalized, smaller assemblies. For example, we created sliding glass walls/doors for the conference room and training center, resulting in flexible spaces that can expand or contract according to need.

The sparse, clean lines, minimalist palette, and selective use of scarlet red on the walls were conceptually driven design decisions that spoke to the idea of the film editor as the lifeblood of filmmaking. Similarly, interplay between vertical panels of opaque and translucent Polygal in the standing copy area mimic the cut and paste of editorial work.
