APOLLO THEATRE

Location: New York, NY
Date: 2002
Program: Facade and Lobby Renovation

The design for the restoration of the Apollo Theatre’s historic façade and lobby relied upon past architectural history to intensify a contemporary visitor’s reading of this memorable place. The concept for the new installation consisted of an amalgam of black and white signage, representative in both their proportions and aesthetics, of a rich history when the structure functioned as a premiere venue for African-American entertainers.

Symbolizing the desire to draw upon the site’s origins, the restoration also incorporated the building’s recently unearthed, original 1915 limestone and granite base pilasters.
